Coming to St. Michael’s Church Great Torrington you will be greeted at the door by a friendly face as it can be daunting coming into a church for the first time.
Sunday services normally start at 10.00, with most morning services lasting just over an hour. If it is your first visit it is probably best to arrive about 10 minutes before the service.
We are a traditional church with a range of people from all ages and different backgrounds, and we accept people as they are – wear whatever you feel comfortable in, and please sit wherever you like.
Babies and children are welcome at all our services. Sometimes bringing them to church can feel like hard work. Babies do cry sometimes. Toddlers can get restless. Older children get bored – and say so! All this can make parents feel anxious and embarrassed. Please don’t be.
If your baby is settled, please stay sitting throughout the service if this is more comfortable, even if others are standing or kneeling. If your baby cries, don’t be embarrassed, do whatever you need to do. If your baby or toddler is restless, walk around the aisle. Near the Children’s area you will find a small selection of books and toys.
You might want to sit towards the front, where your children can see and hear better. Feel free to explain to them what is happening. If you need to leave the service, that’s okay, do come back though!
At a Holy Communion service, everyone is welcome to come forward to the altar. If you are Confirmed by a Bishop in the Church of England, or in a church in communion with it, you are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Bread and Wine. If you have not been confirmed, you and your children are welcome to receive a blessing.
Please bring the service booklet to the altar with you, so that the priest knows you wish to receive a blessing. The church is accessible for disabled people, there is a wheelchair available, and toilet facilities. The audio is amplified, and there is a hearing loop.
You are welcome to stay after the morning service for a cup of tea or coffee, and a chat.
